Profession and discipline of psychotherapy

Abstract

This paper provides a theoretical analysis of the emergence of Psychotherapy Science as an independent scientific discipline and profession, distinct from medicine and psychology. Within the context of this differentiation of psychotherapy science as its own scientific discipline, it is noted that psychotherapy has emerged as a field with effective professionalising. Indeed, it has recently begun the task of institutionalizing the transmission of the essential elements of itself as a discipline with its own form of knowledge through the establishment of universities. These universities seek to form professional psychotherapy scientists who, in turn, seek to scientifically advance knowledge within the field.
